Why Greece’s forgotten second city should be your next holiday destination

So thoroughly does Athens dominate our perceptions of urban life in Greece that the country’s second city is left very much underappreciated. True, Thessaloniki (thessaloniki.travel and visitgreece.gr) does not offer anything quite as magnificent as the Parthenon – but this is a destination awash with food, culture and history. The capital of the region of Central Macedonia, it is part swarthy port on the edge of the Aegean, part gateway to the beaches of Halkidiki (20 miles/32km to the south-east; visit-halkidiki.gr), part hive of southern European life where people spill from shops, bars and eateries. Go soon and you will be in time for Thessaloniki Street Food Festival (May 17-19; thessalonikistreetfoodfestival.com), which will splice music and cuisine to fine effect.
