Wine is definitely a thing in San Francisco. After all, just across the Golden Gate Bridge lies the country’s best wine regions. So it would make sense that Fog City boasts some of the best wine bars this side of Bordeaux. Here are a handful that we particularly love.
Set in an erstwhile record store in a 19th-century building in the Mission, 20 Spot focuses on big Old World wine, many of which hail from France and Germany with a few nice selections from Italy and Croatia as well. In 2017, Sonoma County was devastated by three weeks of aggressive wild fires. Thousands of homes were reduced to ash, winemakers lost hundreds of acres of vines, and ongoing projects ground to a halt. Take a typical southern French village of roughly 200 people, erase the frankly uninspiring car park that acts as the main town square and turn the whole place into a digital detox haven dotted with three gastronomic restaurants and five-star designer rooms. The result, , a luxury village-hotel boasting 12 independent houses scattered around a handful of cobblestone alleyways.
From magenta to lilac, plum to lavender, each house has its walls and shutters painted in contrasting shades of purples and pinks to create a “village within a village” effect. Since its opening in 2015, the place remained voluntarily confidential thanks to a strict no-wifi policy. You won’t find many Instagrammers around the stunningly photogenic streets.
