It’s simply not possible that Iran even accidentally shot down a Ukrainian airliner that crashed with more than 60 Canadians on board, Tehran’s ambassador for international air travel said Thursday.
Suggestions that a surface-to-air missile — intentionally or not — hit the aircraft shortly after it took off early Wednesday are likely motivated by politics — not hard evidence, Farhad Parvaresh told the National Post.
Parvaresh is Iran’s permanent representative to the Montreal-based International Civil Aviation Organization, a UN agency.
“If you talk to experts, this cannot be right. Totally it is wrong, 100 per cent,” he said of the missile theory. “This is something purely technical. It was a disaster, it was a great tragedy.… What is going around is because of some political issues, the tension between Iran and the U.S.”
Shocking video apparently shows the moment that a Ukrainian airliner was struck by an Iranian missile shortly after lifting off from an airport in Tehran.
The 19-second clip, obtained by the New York Times, shows a night sky suddenly illuminated by a flash of light, followed by a deafening boom.
By the clip’s close, the sounds of sirens can be heard in the background.
US officials said Thursday that it was “highly likely” the Ukrainian International Airlines flight, which had 176 people aboard, was struck by an Iranian anti-aircraft missile early Wednesday.
There were no survivors.
OTTAWA — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau addressed the nation Thursday afternoon amid multiple reports pointing the finger at Iran for the downing of a Ukraine International Airlines flight, killing all on board including 138 people who were headed to Canada.
Addressing assembled media in Ottawa, Trudeau said Canada has intelligence from multiple sources that indicates the plane was shot down by an Iranian surface-to-air missile.
“We have intelligence from multiple sources including our Allies and our own intelligence, the intelligence indicates that the plane was shot down by an Iranian surface to air missile. This may well have been unintentional.”
(CNN) The US increasingly believes that Iran mistakenly shot down a Ukrainian airliner on Wednesday, according to multiple US officials. The working theory is based on continuing analysis of data from satellites, radar and electronic data collected routinely by US military and intelligence. The flight crashed following Iranian strikes on US forces in Iraq.Iran’s Civil Aviation Organization head, Ali Abedzadeh, said it would not hand the flight data recorders to Boeing or the United States after they were found on Wednesday.
The attacks came hours after US Defense Secretary Mark Esper said the US should expect retaliation over the US killing of Iranian military commander Qassem Soleimani in a drone strike in Iraq on Friday. Iran says 80 “America terrorists” were killed in the missile strikes, but US president Donald Trump says “All is Well!
A sprawling air base in western Iraq that hosted President Donald Trump during his first visit to a combat zone as commander in chief was one of two military installations where US troops are stationed that came under ballistic missile attack by Iran early Wednesday.
