10 Best Bars in Key West

Bright, fruity tipples, raucous cabaret shows, live jazz performances: by the beach, it’s all about dressed-down fun.

While frozen cocktails with tiny umbrellas (and the tiki bars that serve them) may be a relic of the 1950s in most other places, they’re still a staple of the Florida Keys. Sure, the area has evolved to suit the increasingly luxury-loving clientele who visit, but it also works hard to maintain that frozen-in-time feel (pun intended) that keeps tourists flocking to Florida’s most southerly region year after year. The Keys’ relaxed, lived-in vibe carries over to its bar scene (for the most part); having drinks with friends usually involves a pair of comfy jeans and a T-shirt, plus at least one fruity concoction, as you’ll find at the infamous Sloppy Joe’s. Sea views are, of course, optional, though encouraged (Sunset Pier and Hogfish Bar and Grill have some of the best). But if you’re looking to get dressed up and make it more of an occasion, there are plenty of venues to fit the bill, whether it’s a night of cabaret at La Te Da or handcrafted cocktails and live jazz by candlelight at the Little Room Jazz Club. Just don’t forget the sunblock. Here, we’ve rounded up the best bars in Key West, for when all that sunshine inevitably stirs up your thirst.

8 Best Key West’s Hotels & Resorts

Just like the cast of characters you’ll encounter in Florida’s southernmost tip, no two Keys are exactly alike—and neither are their hotels.

Drive south from Miami along this southernmost stretch of the continental U.S.and you’ll discover an intriguing collection of islands strung together like a shell necklace, each with its own vibe. First up is the kitschy-cute Key Largo, where t-shirt shops may outnumber the tropical fish in John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. Dive into the gin-clear waters here, then rest your salty head at a boutique-style hotel from some of the big name players in the space. If you continue down Overseas Highway you’ll get to Islamorada, which takes its name from the purple-hued sunsets visible from the beachside hammocks and outdoor tiki bars. Further south still, Duck Key beckons families with a plush summer camp vibe. So whether fish trophies and shiplap or cosmopolitan coastal float your boat, there’s a hotel, and a Key, to match your every mood.

10 Best Places for Shopping in Key West

This city may have a reputation for tacky souvenir stores, but don’t be fooled: Key West has plenty of shopping cred.

Sure, Key West has its gimmicks—Duval Street is loaded with gaudy galleries and tee-shirt shops—but look closer, down charming side streets and away from the main drag, and you’ll find plenty of gems. Update your sporty weekend look at Tucker’s Provisions before heading over to The Green Pineapple to flip through boho-chic apparel and accessories (clutching a matcha green tea latte, naturally), or seek out shops like Wanderlust KW for fashionable one-offs you won’t find anywhere else. Looking for a classic Key West souvenir that doesn’t come with a silly tagline? Find some shade—and learn the finer points of the authentic Panama hat—at La Rubia, or head to Rodriguez Cigar Factory, where learning to roll Cuban-style cigars is a local tradition. Get your wallet ready: here’s our round-up of the best places for shopping in Key West.

14 Best Things to Do in Key West

Key West is absolutely packed with history, few great beaches, uncrowded state and national parks, and some of the best sportfishing anywhere in the world.

Key West is not just some Florida beach town. It is absolutely packed with history: Presidents have lived here, wars have been fought here, and one of civilization’s most prolific writers took pen to paper here (and left behind a beautiful home to visit). If that’s not enough for you, the area boasts—expectedly—a few great beaches, and—perhaps unexpectedly—state and national parks with crowds that are delightfully sparse. The sportfishing off Key West is also world-renowned (while we can’t promise you’ll catch a big one…you’ll catch a big one). In case it wasn’t clear already, a trip to the southernmost part of the continental United States will never leave you bored.
