A Dallas firefighter battling a fire outside a burning building Friday morning crawled to safety though burning debris after part of the roof suddenly toppled over and fell on top of him, authorities say.
Firefighters with Dallas Fire-Rescue were called to a fire at a vacant commercial building on the 2600 block of Walnut Hill Lane just before 2 a.m. When they arrived, they reported seeing flames and heavy smoke shooting through the roof.
Using hand lines and ladder pipes, firefighters worked quickly to try to get a handle on the growing fire.
ROME (AP) – A drunken driver plowed into a group of young German tourists in northern Italy early Sunday, killing six people and injuring 11 others, Italian authorities said.
The deadly crash occurred in a village near Valle Aurina, near Bolzano in the Alto Adige region, shortly after 1 a.m. as the Germans – who were between the ages of 20-25 – gathered to board their bus.
The largely German-speaking autonomous region of northern Italy, with its ski resorts in the Dolomites and quaint villages around Bolzano, is popular with German tourists.
“The new year begins with a terrible tragedy,” said the regional president of Alto Adige, Arno Kompatscher. “We are left stunned.”
The driver of the car had a high blood alcohol content and was driving particularly fast, a Carabineri police official in Brunico told The Associated Press, speaking on condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to give his name. He said police had concluded that the car crash into pedestrians was not an act of terrorism.

Sgt Easton, the driver, was as cool-as-a-cucumber when he broadcast on INTOP1: “We need to close the A1 now: a lorry has just toppled onto my patrol car. And I just polished it yesterday!” I nearly spilt my mug of tea but was quickly reassured when told the BMW was a ‘64 plate! pic.twitter.com/eX6lDJGUXy— CS Stewart Carle (@ChSuptRoads) December 10, 2019
Relieved that one of my Road Patrol Sergeants was not seriously injured earlier today on A1 carrying out scene protection after RTCs.
